| The Arno M. Dickertmann award has been initiated by Renata Dickertmann, his wife and business partner.
Arno would have been very pleased to assist deserving undergraduate students in Mechanical Engineering at Toronto Metropolitan University.
Arno’s passion for anything mechanical was reflected in his daily life, always searching for ways in which to improve the design and function of mechanical Items. He was particularly fascinated by large extremely complex devices -- the bigger the better.
Arno founded United Testing Systems Canada Ltd. (UTS) in 1981. He established a high precision force and torque calibration lab within the company and designed many of the custom precision calibration loading frames required for the lab. Under his leadership United Testing Systems Canada Ltd. grew to be one of the largest materials testing equipment and calibration suppliers in Canada.
Arno was a great mentor to many staff over the years. He demonstrated a strong work ethic and anyone who worked with him has taken away life skills that will be useful throughout their lives. Arno enjoyed being a guest speaker at ASM (American Society for Metals) meetings, sharing his strong knowledge in the history of mechanical materials testing. Along the way he acquired many lifelong friends who were respected experts in the industry worldwide.
Arno was always kind and considerate. He had a great sense of humour and would make anyone laugh with one of his jokes of the day. Arno’s other passions in life included traveling. He was also an accomplished musician (accordion, keyboards and singing).
Besides the student award, UTS is also expanding their relationship with Toronto Metropolitan University by offering work term opportunities at their Laboratory. This will provide students with exposure to the many different types of industries utilizing materials testing in research, manufacturing, and quality control settings.
